Finding a Job in the UK

Estimates of the number of Aussies living and working in the UK vary between 200 000 and 300 000. Either way it’s a lot! You will find Australians by and large are very popular with employers and anyone with a good personality and a genuine work ethic should find no problem in getting a decent job especially in London where most of our expatriates live.

But be wary of the old cliche of the Aussie pulling pints in a London bar. Nowadays the Aussie traveller is just as likely to be a lawyer or accountant working in the City (London's business district) and earning a very nice wage indeed thank you. In fact with the recent expansion of the European Community you are more likely to find Poles and Czechs working in London pubs now.

The UK also has a big need for nurses, dentists and teachers. The latter profession can always find work especially in some of the rougher parts of London and elsewhere. The trick is to play up the Aussie aspect of your personality. English school kids are fascinated by Australia thanks to Kylie, Danni, Holly etc. A bit of 'G'day' and 'fair dinkum' plus a passable knowledge of 'Neighbours' characters can buy a lot of kudos with even the most unruly classes.

If you are looking for general work in London then the best places to start are TNT magazine (it’s an essential publication for the Aussie in the UK), Gumtree.com and the local evening paper, The Standard.

If you are would feel happier pre-arranging a job, then there are plenty of companies that will do that for you:
