There aren't many Australian travellers who have not visited the city state of Singapore even if it is just to change planes at Changi airport (which is approximately 30 minutes drive from Singapore City).
Singapore Airlines, Qantas, Jetstar, Emirates and British Airways all have direct services into Singapore from various Australian cities. Indeed Singapore is practically a second home for Qantas who also have their low cost Jetstar Asia operating out there. Malaysian Airlines (via Kuala Lumpur), Thai (via Bangkok) and Cathay Pacific (via Hong Kong) offer the most popular indirect routes.
The currency is the
Singapore Dollar ( Approximately 1.2 SGD for 1 Australian Dollar)
Main tourist highlights:
Singapore’s main attraction is undoubtably it’s shopping opportunities. Orchard road is the main shopping street and is wall to wall with department stores selling top quality retail goods. China Town and the numerous street markets around Little India offer the chance to do yet more shopping as well as the chance to sample Singapore’s diverse ethnic mix.
Raffles Hotel is a major landmark in Singapore and no trip is complete without visiting Raffles for High Tea or at least sampling a Singapore Sling in Longs Bar. As far as eating out and socializing, the main hubs of activity are around Clarke Quay and Boat Quay, which both have numerous restaurants and bars offering a huge choice of cuisines as well as the chance to relax and take in the scenery of the Singapore River after a full days shopping. The ethnic quarters of China Town, Little India, Geylang Serai and Kampong Glam are also popular for eating.
Sentosa Island is Singapore’s biggest alternative attraction. It is a tropical resort, nature park and heritage centre rolled into one. It is Singapore’s beach and is popular with tourists and locals alike. It also has a great night Zoo, Aquarium and Butterfly Park.
Singapore also has a number of parks with immaculately kept gardens, museums and other items related to the Arts scattered around the principality that may be of interest.
Australian passport holders do not need a visa to travel to Singapore as long as they are staying less than 90 days.
